Yep, you read right. There is, currently, at this moment, snow on the ground in San Angelo, Texas! And there was a whole troop of very happy Miller kids out there enjoying it earlier. :) It isn't much; just an inch or two. But schools are out for the day (only in West Texas....) and it seemed like kids were coming out of the woodwork in the neighboring houses to build snowmen and play in the snow this morning/afternoon. Crazy how we've lived here for 2 months and we didn't even know any kids lived in those houses. :P
We had a fun, slighly violent snowball fight (I have a bit of a headache from taking a hard-packed snowball right smack in the face) that started out with girls against boys and ended pretty much every man for himself. Rather than building a snowman, we built forts for the fight...which were promptly obliberated in the war. But it was all so much fun!
Then we all trooped inside to make and devour some snow ice cream. If you've never had it/made it, you should try it! Just get some CLEAN (very important) snow and add milk, vanilla, and sugar to taste. Mmmm, good stuff; especially with some instant cappuccino mix in it! ;) We also had a couple of boys who added chocolate to theirs (just a tad of cocoa powder). We've got extra clean snow in the freezer so we can make some more of that yumminess later. The snow outside is already melting, so we know it won't stick around for long; but we're enjoying it while it lasts.
There is something about snow that makes me reflective. Back a couple weeks ago, when all our friends in Springtown were getting LOTS (read: 14 inches!) of snow, one of them posted this as his Facebook status:
"In the midst of all the busyness of life, God sends down snow that's more beautiful than I can even understand. Thank You, God, for Your grace! Stop my life whenever You want. It's Yours to stop. I'm just here to enjoy the scenery." --Joshua Youngblood
That made me think. Snow does have a way of slowing us down, and if enough of it falls it can bring our busy, crazy lives to a screeching halt. Of course, it's not the only thing that can do that. Other things sometimes suddenly throw our lives off our carefully laid out schedule. The question is, when those life-stopping moments come, do I take the time to relax in my Father's arms, just enjoying the scenery? Or am I too busy fretting about how to make things work?
And then looking out at the snow this morning while it was still falling, covering our ordinary world in a soft, extraordinarily beautiful white blanket, I had a thought. Just as snow somehow magically transforms the normal, every day things into something worth wondering at, God takes the simple things and makes them something grand. He can make a prophet from a stutterer; a king from a shepherd boy; a faithful apostle from a blundering, sometimes faithless fisherman; and a saint from a sinner. With that kind of transforming power, I can't help but wonder: what can He make me?!?
